Dundee & Tayside |
|
The city of Dundee rises away from the banks of the River Tay as it widens into the North Sea - a situation rivalled by few other cities. Still the city itself is overlooked by the high point of Dundee Law, from where the river bridges are seen stretching over to Fife. Its position does lend a distinct atmosphere to the city, as has its history as a major textile producer well in to the 20th century - allied to the shipbuilding industry that helped to develop that trade. New modern industries are there now, and Dundee has continually rejuvenated itself while preserving valued items from its past - such as the RRS Discovery, which has pride of place in its dock by the Tay.

Dundee is the largest settlement in Tayside, but the region has several pleasant towns to be included in any tour - not to be missed are local delicacies such as the famed Forfar bridies and Arbroath Smokies, and take time to stroll in these less hurried places. Glamis Castle may have centre stage in the region, but Arbroath Abbey and others stand as impressive reminders of the history of the region and the country. |
